Jerusalem is the religious and historic epicenter of the world and offers a dynamic travel experience, both modern and ancient. With 3,000-year old landmarks, bustling market places, 60+ museums that showcase the country’s rich culture, and unique culinary experiences, Jerusalem offers a tourism experience like no other.
Jerusalem is situated 650m above sea level and is surrounded by the Judea hills to its west. The entire Jerusalem hills region is considered Mecca for cyclists in Israel, Israel’s Pro cycling team ICA, and international cyclists who are looking for roads at great condition, challenging climbs, and fresh green surroundings decorated with over 38 vineyards and nature reserves.
Jerusalem’s GFNY race initiates with a 20km ride along the city’s top iconic sites, continues to the Judea hills and returns via Israel’s longest bike tunnel making it a great add-on to your bucket list.
GFNY Jerusalem race weekend will take place in Jerusalem’s downtown, a walking distance to Jerusalem’s Old City, and in proximity to the bike trail that surrounds the city.
The start of the race takes place at the Jerusalem Arena Sports complex which is a 6Km bike ride from downtown, and the finish is at the Jerusalem Aquarium, approx 2.7Km from the race start location.
After an exciting mass start you will ride towards Hebron road that connects Jerusalem to Bethlehem, the road will take you to Hanatziv Promenade for a great view of the entire Old City. From there you will continue to Mount Zion, ride along the Old City walls, Jaffa Gate and climb towards the downtown making way to the government’s compound and Jerusalem‘s museum district.
You will descend via the Hebrew university service road and ascend the road leading to the Jerusalem forest for a loop around Mount Herzl, Yad Vashem national holocust museum followed by a descend towards the picturesque village of Ein Karem, also the birthplace of John the Baptist. Here is where you exit the city and ride surrounded by Judea hills green scenery, making way to Mahasia junction.
The Long Route riders will repeat the loop from Kerem circle to Mahasia. Once back at Kerem circle you will enter a 2.1km cycling tunnel leading to the finish line located in front of the Israel Aquarium where festivities, post-race meal and awards ceremony will be awaiting you.
