GFNY New York City
15 May 2022
GFNY Jerusalem is CONFIRMED to take place on October 1, 2021.
Jerusalem is the religious and historic epicenter of the world and offers a dynamic travel experience, both modern and ancient. With 3,000-year old landmarks, bustling market places, 60+ museums that showcase the country’s rich culture, and unique culinary experiences, Jerusalem offers a tourism experience like no other.
Jerusalem is situated 650m above sea level and is surrounded by the Judea hills to its west. The entire Jerusalem hills region is considered Mecca for cyclists in Israel, Israel’s Pro cycling team ICA, and international cyclists who are looking for roads at great condition, challenging climbs, and fresh green surroundings decorated with over 38 vineyards and nature reserves.
Jerusalem’s GFNY race initiates with a 20km ride along the city’s top iconic sites, continues to the Judea hills and returns via Israel’s longest bike tunnel making it a great add-on to your bucket list.
GFNY Jerusalem race weekend will take place in Jerusalem’s downtown, a walking distance to Jerusalem’s Old City, and in proximity to the bike trail that surrounds the city.
The start of the race takes place at the Jerusalem Arena Sports complex which is a 6Km bike ride from downtown, and the finish is at the Jerusalem Aquarium, approx 2.7Km from the race start location.
After an exciting mass start you will ride towards Hebron road that connects Jerusalem to Bethlehem, the road will take you to Hanatziv Promenade for a great view of the entire Old City. From there you will continue to Mount Zion, ride along the Old City walls, Jaffa Gate and climb towards the downtown making way to the government’s compound and Jerusalem‘s museum district.
You will descend via the Hebrew university service road and ascend the road leading to the Jerusalem forest for a loop around Mount Herzl, Yad Vashem national holocust museum followed by a descend towards the picturesque village of Ein Karem, also the birthplace of John the Baptist. Here is where you exit the city and ride surrounded by Judea hills green scenery, making way to Mahasia junction.
The Long Route riders will repeat the loop from Kerem circle to Mahasia. Once back at Kerem circle you will enter a 2.1km cycling tunnel leading to the finish line located in front of the Israel Aquarium where festivities, post-race meal and awards ceremony will be awaiting you.
LONG COURSE IS A COMPETITION: Only the finishers of the long course are eligible for category rankings and Overall and Podium awards. If you want to race and be ranked in your category, you must complete the long course. Top 10% of finishers in each age group earn a spot in the Qualifier Corral at every GFNY World event.
MEDIUM COURSE IS NOT A COMPETITION: The riders of the medium course will be provided their start-to-finish time, but will not be ranked by finish time. All finish times will be listed in alphabetical order.
THE JERSEY: All riders receive the official GFNY Jerusalem race jersey, which is mandatory attire at the race. The jersey is designed in NYC and Made in Italy.
CHIP TIMING: GFNY Jerusalem is a timed race. Each athlete has their own timing chip, which starts right after you cross the start line and stops when you cross the finish line. Timing results for all riders will be provided at the finish area on race day and online after the race.
FINISHER MEDAL: Every GFNY Jerusalem finisher receives a medal, no matter which distance they completed. All finishers also earn a “Finish” towards their 3x2020 GFNY medal or the 10x medal. Go to gfny.com/medals for more information on GFNY’s multi-finisher medals.
If you finish the long course in the top 20% of your age group at GFNY Jerusalem 2021, you will start in the Qualifier Corral at all GFNYs for the next 380 days.
